Most police forces are maintaining a good standard of service to the public, despite dramatic increases in demand and ongoing financial pressures, but cracks are beginning to show, according to a report published by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS).

Police Federation reaction to latest figures

Warnings that falling officer numbers and funding cuts are having a direct influence on crime numbers, have been made evident today with the release of the latest crime figures, according to the Police Federation of England and Wales.

The report’s main highlights:

  • Rising recorded crime – increase of 11%, largest annual rise in a decade (page 8 and 10)
  • Falling workforce numbers – down 2% (page 9, 10, 22)
  • Demand on call centres 999/101 calls – up 10.5% (page 15, 25)
  • Changes in techno / cybercrime (page 12)
  • Using technology / digital transformation to improve efficiencies (page 12, 33, 34)
  • Need to increase strategic workforce planning and audit workforce skills to maximise use of resourcing (page 13, 34)
